Are you a fan of fans? Your alien’s whole body could be in the shape of a fan, or it could be a handy addition like a fin or a display of feathers.

Fan shapes appear over and over in the plant and animal kingdoms. Take for example the scallop, a mollusk with a fan-shaped shell that it uses to swim across the sea floor at surprising speed. The lionfish fans out its array of poisonous spines to keep predators away, and the feather duster worm spreads out its fan-shaped crown to trap plankton to feed itself. Fans can also be displayed just to impress – something at which the peacock absolutely excels! How may a fan shape be adapted to help your alien hunt, move, or show off?
